Clinical Neuropsychology is a specialty field within clinical psychology focused on understanding brain function through systematic analysis of brain-behaviour relationships.
A clinical neuropsychologist is a doctoral-level, licensed psychologist with advanced expertise in how behavior and skills are related to brain anatomy and systems. Clinical neuropsychologists use this knowledge in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and/or rehabilitation of patients with neurologic, medical, neurodevelopmental, and/or psychiatric conditions, as well as other cognitive and learning disorders.
A psychological assessment involves a combination of psychological procedures, including clinical interviews, observations, questionnaires, and tasks used to better understand an individual’s emotions, personality, and behaviour, and their impact on relationships and functioning at home, school, work, and other environments. These assessments are for individuals with mood, anxiety, conduct, impulse-control, and/or trauma-related problems, personality and interpersonal difficulties, and other psychological concerns. The outcome of a psychological assessment is a diagnosis (if applicable) and evidence-based recommendations for treatment (e.g., psychotherapy, accommodations in the workplace or at school, etc.). Psychological assessments may also be geared to better understand the impact of a workplace accident or a motor vehicle accident and to plan treatment.
A psychoeducational assessment is used to:
Evaluate individual learning and achievement (reading, writing, and math) difficulties.
Evaluate strengths and weaknesses
Identify learning challenges associated with individual learning profiles,
Predict academic performance
Assist with planning for an individual’s schooling.
The outcome of a psychoeducational assessment is a diagnosis (if applicable) and evidence-based recommendations for development of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), Response to Intervention (RTI) approaches, and coordination of additional learning supports and services.
A behavioural assessment is used to identify why a behaviour is occurring and how to best intervene. A behavioural assessment has a narrower focus than a psychological assessment. It is a functional approach to assessment that uses a variety of techniques and tools to observe, describe, explain, and predict challenging or problematic behaviours. Whereas the focus of a psychological assessment is diagnostic in nature, the focus of a behavioural assessment is to identify the specific characteristics of a behaviour. A behavioural assessment involves documenting numerous sources of information (e.g., interviews, observations, data collection) to identify the antecedents (i.e., triggers), consequences, and any contextual factors that are maintaining a behaviour. The outcome of a behavioural assessment includes a definition of the target behaviour(s), hypotheses as to the function of the behaviour(s) (e.g., attention, escape, access, etc.), and specific recommendations to help create a customized behaviour support or behaviour therapy plan. Whereas a behavioural assessment is not diagnostic per say, some psychological problems may become evident and would warrant a diagnosis or further evaluation.
Mariani and Associates offers consultation, coordination of therapy services, and/or peer mentoring with behaviour therapists, rehabilitation therapists, psychotherapists, and other healthcare professionals. Kindly contact us for more details.

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER ASSESSMENT
A specialized Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment is a specific type of psychological evaluation used to gauge the presence of symptoms related to Autism Spectrum Disorder and the level of functional impairment resulting from these symptoms. The assessment involves a thorough differential diagnosis to evaluate whether there are other psychological disorders or developmental problems that can account or partially account for symptoms. The outcome of a specialized Autism Spectrum Disorder assessment is a diagnosis (if applicable) and evidence-based recommendations for intervention, and coordination of additional supports and services.
A developmental assessment is specific type of psychological assessment that involves evaluating an individual’s development in terms of language, motor, social, emotional, and cognitive skills, along with any problems in completing activities of daily living. For children under the age of 5, a developmental assessment is used to estimate where an individual is in their development compared to others their age. For older children, adolescents, and adults, it is used to identify the possibility of an Intellectual Disability (ID) or borderline intellectual functioning. The outcome of a developmental assessment is to identify areas of delayed development and to recommend specific goals for treatment, coordination of additional services, and identification for the purpose of receiving developmental supports (e.g., Developmental Services Ontario).
